This guide explains the general wiring of a SUPCO SM5109 condenser fan motor in place of Whirlpool W10822259.
Wire functions
SM5109 lead | Connects to | Notes |
Black (either) | Hot / Line (120 V) | Two black leads are interchangeable. |
Black (other) | Neutral | Match to neutral from harness. |
Green | Ground | To chassis ground or ground wire in harness. |
Adapting the 3-pin OEM plug
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Cut the old motor’s 3-pin connector off the harness leaving enough length.
- Strip about 1/2" of insulation from each harness wire.
- Use the supplied wire nuts to join:
- Harness Hot (often red/brown) → SM5109 Black
- Harness Neutral (white) → SM5109 Black
- Harness Ground (green or bare) → SM5109 Green
- Mount motor, install fan blade, and keep wires clear of the blade path.
- Plug in and test. The fan should run when the compressor runs.
Fan rotation tip
The motor’s rotation is fixed. If airflow seems wrong, flip the fan blade over so air is blown across the compressor and condenser coils.
