The Whirlpool WP661600 AP6010250 2-Speed Direct Drive Motor powers agitation, spin, and drain. If your washer fills but won’t move, hums, or leaves clothes dripping wet, the drive motor may be worn or failing.
This OEM-compatible replacement restores strong wash action, proper spin speed, and reliable draining—without paying OEM prices.
The WP661600 motor reverses direction for agitation and spin, driving your washer’s mechanical system through the direct-drive coupling and transmission.

My Whirlpool washer fills and starts to agitate, but the cycle stops as soon as it tries to switch into spin. It just hums and won’t drain the water out. I checked the pump for clogs and didn’t see anything. Could the motor be the cause?
Answer: Hi Maria. If the washer hums when shifting from wash to spin, that’s often a sign the motor WP661600 is locking up under load. You should also inspect the direct-drive coupling. But based on your description, the motor is the most likely cause.

I’m testing the windings on my 2-speed motor. The high-speed winding reads 7.6 ohms, but the low-speed side shows infinite resistance. Does that mean the motor is dead?
Answer: Hi Jeff. Yes — an open winding (infinite resistance) means the low-speed circuit is burned out. The WP661600 motor assembly must be replaced.

My old Whirlpool washer has a square component mounted on the side of the motor with wires going into it. It looks like a capacitor. Do I reuse it on the new motor?
Answer: Hi Caroline. Yes — that’s the motor start capacitor (part WP8572717). You’ll reuse it unless it’s bulging, cracked, or leaking. It is mounted directly to the motor on some models.

My washer fills during every cycle, even during spin, and then just stops. The motor never runs. Could this be the motor or timer?
Answer: Hello Chad. When a washer fills at the wrong times and doesn’t agitate or spin, the pressure switch or water-level hose is usually the cause. The motor won’t run unless the switch confirms proper water level. Check the pressure switch before replacing the motor.

When my washer starts to spin, I hear rapid clicking for a few seconds and then it continues normally. No burning smell or issues. Is this the motor going bad?
Answer: Hi Randy. The clicking is usually the motor overload protector tripping briefly. This can be caused by a weak capacitor WP8572717, a pump dragging, or a motor beginning to fail. The capacitor should read between 189–227 microfarads.
